about

The Strawberry Beds is a picturesque spot near Chapelizod village on the
outskirts of Dublin. It was a popular excursion area for Dubliners in the early nineteen-hundreds. Jaunting cars and charabancs carried young couples and families out there and were met by strawberry vendors and musicians.

Strawberries were sold on lettuce leaves from the cottages along the way.
The melody and first few lines of this song came to me one Sunday afternoon as I was driving through the Strawberry Beds.

lyrics

Strawberry Beds

It was by the bonny banks of the river I strayed
With you my love on an August day
With the leaves o’erhead and the river so green
And the fine young swallows all darting free
It was here I asked you if we would be wed
And you gave your heart by the Strawberry Beds

For year on year we returned to this place
I’d try and remember your startled face
For all that summer I courted you well
We came home happy with news to tell
My parents embraced me and kissed your sweet head
When we told of our pledge by the Strawberry Beds

The seasons have come and the seasons have passed
We loved each other until the last
But now you’re gone and I walk here alone
Where the leaves still hang and the water flows
It was here I asked you if we would be wed
And you gave your heart by the Strawberry Beds

It was by the bonny banks of the river I strayed
With you my love on an August day
With the leaves o’erhead and the river so green
And the fine young swallows all darting free
It was here I asked you if we would be wed
And you gave your heart by the Strawberry Beds
And you gave your heart by the Strawberry Beds
